Dr. Rebecca Hage Thomley received the 2011 “Disaster Relief Hero Award” from the American Red Cross Twin Cities Area Chapter. The award was presented to her as “an individual who exhibited heroic efforts in response to a disaster” for her volunteer work with the American Red Cross and Headwaters Relief Organization

Twin Cities Red Cross Announces 2011 Heroes Awards Recipients

The American Red Cross Twin Cities Area Chapter has announced its 2011 Heroes Awards recipients. These winners have performed extraordinary acts ranging from pulling a woman and her dog from frigid waters and reaching a 100-gallon blood donation milestone, to giving a stranger life-saving CPR and making a dying boy’s dream come true.

“Once a year we pause to recognize people in our community who have shown remarkable courage in their daily lives,” said Phil Hansen, Regional CEO for the Twin Cities Area Chapter. “These community heroes share a willingness to respond to life-threatening crises and exemplify our humanitarian mission.”

Red Cross Heroes are honored for demonstrating the Red Cross mission to provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

The 2011 Heroes Award winners are Citizen Hero Award, Daniel Carlson, Excelsior; Community Hero Award, Ruth Johnson, Coon Rapids; Disaster Relief Hero Award, Dr. Rebecca Thomely, Golden Valley; Emergency Medical Assistance Hero Award, Molly Larson, Brooklyn Park;  Fire Fighter Hero Award, Captain Brian Brandt, Inver Grove Heights, Lieutenant Luke Steenberg, Inver Grove Heights, and Beth Molstad, Prior Lake; Give Life Hero Award, Bob Nelson, St. Francis; Good Samaritan Hero Award, Anonymous; Law Enforcement Hero Award, St. Paul Police Officers Jermaine Davis, Todd Ludvick, Jason Giampolo, and Justin Tiffany; Military Hero Award, General Dennis Schulstad, Edina; and Youth Good Samaritan Hero Award, Megan Millmann, Belle Plaine.

The Heroes Awards will be presented on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at the McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The general public is invited to the breakfast to hear the heroes’ inspiring stories and help raise funds to support the mission of the American Red Cross.
