Functional Sign-Language Basics for Direct-Care Staff

This is a very hands-on course in which participants will learn several functional signs that are essential for direct-care staff who work with individuals who have developmental disabilities and are deaf or unable to speak.  The 12 hour class will be broken into six different sessions: 

Session 1 &2: Visual concepts, basic movements, the alphabet, and “help” signs. 

Session 3: Kitchen signs—signs for  foods, items, and activities in the kitchen. 

Session 4: Bath and Bedroom-- signs for grooming, clothing, body parts, and cleaning 

Session 5: Community Signs—signs for places, activities, people, safety and danger, and transportation. 

Session 6: Wrap-up and review of signs that were previously learned.

About the Instructor:
Jo Wiseth is a designated coordinator for three residential homes that serve deaf adults with developmental disabilities. Jo has an A.A.S. degree in Human Services and has worked with people developmental disabilities for 34 years. For twelve of those years, she has worked strictly with people who are also deaf. Jo has taught sign language courses for Community Education in the Minneapolis School District for three years, as well as teaching functional sign language courses for various human service agencies.
