Utilizing Relaxation in Behavioral Strategies

Many of the undesirable behaviors that our people with developmental disabilities exhibit are the product of their inability to effectively cope with the stress that they may be feeling.  Research has shown that many of these behaviors can be reduced by teaching the individual more effective ways of the coping with their stress.  This class will explore different relaxation techniques that can be used with people who have developmental disabilities across various functioning levels.  The instructors will discuss the physiological and psychological effects of stress on the body and behaviors.  They will demonstrate different relaxation exercises that can be taught to individuals on a proactive basis and used as response strategies.  Participants will have the opportunity to practice these strategies.
