Coping With Death, Grief and Loss With Special Needs Consumers

Grief occurs in response to the loss of someone or something and is a normal and natural response to loss. Common reactions to loss include: denial, numbness, shock, bargaining, depression, anger, acceptance. For most, one response is to reach out to old and new friends and re-establish personal relationships. For many special needs consumers whose relationships tend to comprise immediate family and caregivers, establishing new relationships after a loss is extremely difficult if not impossible.

About the Instructor:
Marya Owston Hage, M.S., L.P., L.I.S.W., Marya serves as a psychologist on the Stress Team of the American Red Cross. Some assignments include the Oklahoma City Hot Line, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, the Pentagon after 9/11 and the Upper Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota. She is a member of the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing team, which works with First Responders after traumatic events on the job.
