Beyond Diversity Part II: A Workshop on Undoing “Isms” and Sharing Power In Our Daily Experiences

This program will focus on strategies for addressing prejudices and biases in the workplace. Participants will learn how biases and prejudices impact workplace productivity and individual wellness. Those who join this program will gain skills in self-reflection, conflict management and personal growth that address power differentials, biases and decision-making. This workshop is designed to address cultural competence and biases at an intermediate level and will require previous engagement in the Beyond Diversity Program.

Course Objectives:

  1. Participants will understand how “isms” and biases are formed and maintained.
  2. Participants will learn strategies for addressing how both personal and institutional power differentials impact the development of biases, shared power and decision-making processes.
  3. Participants will gain skills in self-reflection, conflict management and personal growth that promote the development of cultural competence and shared power in personal and professional relationships.

About the Instructor:
Dr. BraVada Garrett-Akinsanya is a licensed clinical psychologist and Executive Director of the African American Child Wellness Institute, a children’s mental health agency dedicated to the research, delivery and coordination of comprehensive wellness strategies for children of African descent. She also serves as the President of Brakins Consulting and Psychological Services, which has the mission of “providing excellent, culturally competent mental health and consultation services that meet the needs of children, adults, families and organizations.” Dr. Garrett-Akinsanya is a recognized leader in Multiculturalism in the American Psychological Association and the first African American to serve as President of the Minnesota Psychological Association. She is a nationally recognized speaker who has written, presented and consulted extensively in the areas of developmental psychology, multiculturalism, severe psychopathology and African-American mental health.
